It's time that we all get together for our first family reunion. It's going to be AWESOME! So get your thinking caps on because I'll need everyones help to make this happen.
To start, the Kahumoku Family Reunion is scheduled for 2 weeks in Hawaii, beginning July 21, 2014 through August 1, 2014.
Why Hawaii?
Because that's where we are from and it's the Kahumoku tradition to have it at the beach to get in touch with our "Hawaiian Style". Yes, this is 'our' first reunion, but the Kahumoku's in our extended family have always had previous reunions at the beach. You remember right? Alamoana Beach Park to be specific. Plus, wouldn't it be better with the family on the beach instead of being couped up on a cruise-line with no where to go but in circles on varied levels, or at a winter lodge freezing to death, or somewhere at a lame park near a lake? Just saying...
Why 2 weeks?
Because I said. Nah, just kidding. It's really up to you how long you would like to stay. Of course, we all have to work and schedule our PTO with our jobs. But in truth, a trip to Hawaii is expensive, so why not get the most out of your money. Plus, 2 weeks will fly by SO fast!
Where in Hawaii, which island?
Well, I'm not sure. I was thinking the island of Oahu near Waimanalo or Bellows Beach. We already know the island since we were raised there and both Waimanalo and Bellows Beach offers safe beaches for the kids. I really didn't want to go to the Big Island since the beaches suck. Plus, all of our fun childhood memories (yes, some of us may have to dig deep...really deep...for a fun childhood memory - but I have many of them with all of you and thinking about them makes me miss you all even more) were made there in the island of Oahu, and it would be nice to share them with our children before they grow up and lead there own lives. However, this question is a family decision. Please submit your vote on the right hand side of the blog by September 30th 2011.
Why July 21, 2014?
This date was picked because it's the best time to fish for blue marlin and you can win big bucks for the fishing tournament! Kidding... I mean, it's true, but we're coming together for the family, not fishing. I chose July 21st 2014 because it'll give everyone enough time to save for the event. It is also the best time of the year in regards to weather conditions. Yes, it is 80 degrees year round but did you know that the waves at the beach are extremely calm during the summer months? If we were to schedule it during the fall, winter or spring months, than we'd have to pay extra close attention to the kids at the beach since the ocean currents change during those months. Please submit your vote on the right-hand side of the blog by September 30th 2011.
What are we going to do there?
Are you kidding me...it's Hawaii. There's a ton of stuff to do and eat! It'll be so fun and yummy. Boogie boarding, surfing, torching, going to the tide pools, jumping off "the Rock", luau's, building sand castles, sand-surfing, tanning (or staying in the shade), relaxing, lei-making, diving, fishing, hiking to hidden waterfalls, eating at Leonards or Pa'alakai Bakery, Don Yang, Zippy's, U-Choice-In, Anna Miller's, and so much more...Yum Yum!
The first day will be our sign-in day, to greet everyone and there families. Everyone will receive pamphlets of things to do in Hawaii and a reunion itinerary of family events throughout the two weeks so that everyone will always know what is happening and where you need to be. Not everyday will have a family event because that would be certifiably insane. There will be a few days to relax and spend time with your own families in Hawaii so that you can make your own memories with your spouse and children.
I am hoping to schedule in two reunion days. The first reunion will be of our family, spouses and children. The location is undecided at this point. The second reunion will be of our family, spouses and children plus our extended family and maybe a few friends we haven't seen in a while. The second reunion will definitely be at the beach, pot luck style.
There is a lot of work to be done and I can't do everything by myself. I would like to initiate a family reunion committee to keep this thing organized. This committee will come together on a quarterly basis. Each person or team of two on the committee will be in charge of one aspect of the reunion. For example, finances, vacation rentals, food, activities, positive motivator's and more. More details will follow.
If you would like to volunteer for a specific committee team, or have any questions, comments or concerns, please email me at lahela_kea@hotmail.com . I am always open to discussion, so please feel free to hit me up with whatever you've got.
I am really excited for this family reunion. I hope that each of us will be open to attending and helping in this event. Remember that this is a work in progress and the first time that we've ever attempted a family reunion. More posts and details will follow.
If we can't fish, count me out. Just kidding. Just trying to make you mad babe. Hey, can I be president of the fishing committee? I nominate myself. Are we allowed to hunt? Can we start a family fishing derby? Can we all pitch in and buy a boat for two weeks? Will you be mad at me if I fish every day for two weeks? I nominate Duke as vice president of the fishing committee. Did you hear that Duke? We get to fish for two whole weeks.
ReplyDeleteI love you Lahela.
We need to do this. Three years is a good amount of time to plan & save. This can be a reality - Let's Just Do It.
ReplyDeleteI think this is an awesome plan. As for the dates, I'm not sure yet since it does fall in during dipnetting dates. Of course ADF&G could change that up so who knows...
I agree with Waimanalo beach/Bellows. Chris and I were there last December and he just loved it.
The traveling funds will be the most challenging for everyone, so we do need to start that ASAP. Again, I'll say three years is enough time for each of us to help save. I suggest money and miles.
I'll be on the committee. I'll be following the blog weekly. Hope to see other posts soon.

Lahela,
I've tried several times to leave a comment on the reunion blog but for some reason it won't let me. Sorry! Guess you'll get an email instead.
Thanks so much for the hard work you've put into planning and getting this reunion started. The blog looks great and it all sounds GREAT. Count us in. Willie and I would love to be on the committee and help plan or whatever you need.
My boys are in year-round school. This year they started back to school July 11th. They would not be able to miss two weeks of school, but I also have no idea what the school schedule will be like in three years. For all I know the school could change back to traditional or we could be living somewhere else! So I guess my vote right now would be for the Dec. time you suggested so we wouldn't miss school.
Thanks again for all of your work putting this together!
Love,
Natalie
